Novel Playlist
Song 1- Sara Bareilles- Brave
(http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/sarabareilles/brave.html)Quote: "She listened to everything that happened, and she told me I was brave"(28).
I chose this song as reference to the quote that I've chosen from my book, Wintergirls, because they both have a connection. One example of how they're both alike, is because in the quote/book Wintergirls Lia the main character, is telling Cassie how she's struggling by not eating to become skinny. Cassie who is also striving to become the skinniest girl as well tells Lia "you're brave". This starts to bring up a connection between the book/quote and the song. The song is similar to the book, because the lyrics and the title basically explains itself well. The song Brave explains how the "person" in the song is strong, and nothing can hurt him/her.
Song 2- Laslo Slomovits- I didn't stop
(http://www.songsforteaching.com/charactereducationsongs/rsk/ididntgiveup.htm)Quote: "I'm so hungry, but I have to stay strong"(156).
I chose this song as a reference for not giving up, because this quote is about the struggle of Lia trying to not give in to her stomach and eat. In the story Lia had encounter many foods, but told herself not to eat, and to stay strong. In the song I didn't stop was about the singer trying to encourage the audience to not give up, and the singer also explains how he encountered obstacles but overcame them. Furthermore I thought that this song was a pretty good reference to the quote, and also the story of Lia's adventure to becoming skinny.
Song 3-TLC- UnPretty
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTTfn3EeZ7g)(www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/tlc/unpretty.html)
Quote: "I am disgusting, horribly fat"(128).
I chose "UnPretty" as a reference to the quote from "Wintergirls" because they both shared a the same problem which was insecurities. This quote explains how Lia didn't just only have a goal to become the skinniest girl, but because she was so obsessed with becoming skinny she started to have insecurities, thinking she's fat and ugly every time she ate too much. The song "UnPretty" is similar also to Lia's insecurity problem. "UnPretty" is about a singer talking about how she had to deal with her insecurities when hanging out with the person she's close with, this relates to Lia because Cassie, Lia's bestfriend, who died is haunting her, saying that she is fat, furthermore quenching her insecurity.
Song 4-Hatfield Juliana- Until I Almost Died
(www.metrolyrics.com/until-i-almost-died-lyrics-blake-babies.html)Quote: "They told me I was in the hospital for ten days. I slept. Dreamless"(274).
Until I almost died is a reference to the quote from "Wintergirls" on page 274, because both song and book character writes about how they both almost died. In the chapter Lia is at motel at where Cassie had previously died at, Lia was trying to run away from all her problems by running away with a friend, but in the end he declined her offer and request, and he even told her that what she is trying to do was wrong, leaving her at the motel. Lia was very weak in this specific chapter and tried to go back home from the motel but she fainted knowing that she will die, but then wakes up in a hospital finding herself alive but "slept dreamless". The song Until I Almost Died relates to this topic mainly because the singer sings about how he/she almost died, "When my body gave out, it was so, so weak until I almost died". This quote from the song convinced me that it is similar to the quote in "Wintergirls".
Reasons for posting
My intentions of sending this playlist is to show the reader how the story in "Wintergirls" can relate to not only songs, but real life experiences. For example Staying strong, trying to not give up on what you want. Or being brave, if your doing something that is risky but it'll will help accomplish your goal then you have to be brave. Also insecurities, everyone is insecure about many things but never really show it, and this happens a lot IRL. And another example is to learn that sometimes doing something you want could end up hurting yourself, in "Wintergirls", and even songs to prove it.Wintergirls By Laurie Halse Anderson
